Black Sabbath
The godfathers of all things heavy and metal began their quest to terrify the world in 1967. Previously, while in their teenage years, Geezer Butler and John Michael (Ozzy) Osbourne had formed the band "Rare Reed," while Tony Iommi and Bill Ward had been in bands "Mythology" and "Cumbria". On an autumn day in 1967, the four congregated together and one can only speculate what kicked off the ensuing doom machine. Initially, they called themselves "Earth", but after discovering another band had (fortunately) already taken the name, they took the title of a song Geezer had written, entitled "Black Sabbath," which was most likely inspired by a horror flick by Boris Karloff.
Their sound was dark and heavy, unlike anything anyone had heard before. The reason for this was simple. When he was seventeen years old, Tony Iommi had an accident at the metal factory where he was working as a welder. The person who was supposed to cut the metal for Tony to weld didn't show up to work and, as a result, Tony was left to cut the metal himself.
What could possibly go wrong?
While cutting a metal part, the machine's blade came down, smashing the tips of his middle and ring fingers on his left hand, just above the first knuckle, which ripped off as he pulled his hand away in shock. "I was actually going to leave the job that day. I had it planned, I'd joined the band. We were going to tour Germany." Iommi said in Metal: A Headbanger's journey 2005 documentary. "And it's really strange what happened."
With the tips completely obliterated by the blade, nothing to sew back on, the doctors were only able to graft skin from his arm over the nubs of his fingers and for a lesser man that would have been the end of his musical career, but Tony was determined to play. Discovering that prosthetic makers would be unable to supply him with fingertips. He began trying to concoct his own
